How to solve cryptic crosswords
Start with a simple idea: a typical cryptic clue contains a straight definition and instructions that lead to the same answer.
Lesson 1: The hidden-word clue
Sometimes an answer is concealed inside consecutive letters of the clue.
Example: Fruit found in cheAP RICOTta (7)
Answer: APRICOT. The definition is “Fruit”, and “found in” suggests looking inside the remaining words: cheAP RICOTta.
What to check
- Find a possible definition, usually at the beginning or end.
- Look for a signal such as “in”, “some of”, or “part of”.
- Find consecutive letters that match the number in brackets.
- Verify that the answer matches the definition.
Remember: an indicator can mean different things in different clues. Always check both wordplay and definition.
